ジョーゴ・ド・パウは、ポルトガルの武術です。ポルトガル語では、「棒フェンシング」を意味しています。直訳すると、「棒試合」もしくは「こん棒試合」になります。この武術のはじまりは、北部ポルトガルで、主に護身を目的としたものでした。ナポレオン戦争時に、ナポレオンの軍隊がポルトガルを占領しようとしたとき、対抗するゲリラ兵がこの武術を用いたのです。20世紀には、田舎から都市へ人々が移住し、銃が簡単に手に入るようになったため、ジョーゴ・ド・パウは急激に衰退しました。しかし、ジョーゴ・ド・パウはスポーツとして現在でも行われています。
O Jogo do Pau é uma arte marcial portuguesa, que teve origem no norte de Portugal. A arte marcial foi primeiramente para defesa pessoal. O Jogo do Pau foi também utilizado em guerrilhas contra as tropas de Napoleão quando ocuparam Portugal durante as Guerras Napoleônicas. Quando a população rural migrou para as cidades no século 20, as armas de fogo estavam facilmente disponíveis. O Jogo do Pau tornou-se rapidamente obsoleto, porém o esporte ainda é praticado.
Jogo do Pau is a Portuguese martial art. In Portuguese Jogo do Pau means "stick fencing." A literal translation would be "stick game" or "staff game." Jogo do Pau is originally from northern Portugal. The martial art was primarily for self-defense. Jogo do Pau was also used by guerrillas against Napoleon's troops when they occupied Portugal during the Napoleonic Wars. When the rural people migrated to the cities in the 20th century, firearms were easily available. Jogo do Pau quickly declined, but the sport is still practiced today.
